TAKE TIME FOR

FINANCE

All Americans are likely to get $1,000 checks within a few weeks.

Mnuchin says White House working to send $1,000 checks to most Americans within 3 weeks

The distribution of economic impact payments will begin in the next three weeks and will be distributed automatically, with no action required for most people. Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file to receive a payment. Instead, payments will be automatically deposited into their bank accounts. However, some people who typically do not file returns will need to submit a simple tax return to receive the stimulus payment. When more specific details become available, we will update this page.

$1,200 for individuals, $2,400 for couples, $500 per child

Under the draft bill, single Americans would receive $1,200, married couples would get $2,400, and parents would see $500 for each child under age 17. However, the payments would start to phase out for individuals with adjusted gross incomes of more than $75,000, and those making more than $99,000 would not qualify at all. The thresholds are doubled for couples. About 90% of Americans would be eligible to receive full or partial payments, according to estimates by the Tax Policy Center.

Will most people who are receiving Social Security retirement and disability payments each month also get a stimulus payment?

Yes.

Will eligible unemployed people get these stimulus payments? Veterans?

Yes and yes.

COVID-19 and Unemployment Benefits

Find your state unemployment office

Small business owners will also collect unemployment.  Usually most self-employed people aren’t eligible for unemployment, but congress recently passed a $2 trillion stimulus package, to include self-employed workers.

Key outstanding issues in stimulus package:

  • What piece of the package grants discretion to the Treasury secretary in terms of the restrictions for the companies that receive loans as it relates to future stock buy backs.
  • the total aid package that can be directed to the states and distressed large industries.
  • Expansion of stabilization funds for states and localities.
  • Expansion of unemployment insurance.
  • Funds toward health care providers and front line health workers.
  • Forgivable loan package for small businesses to keep employees paid even as business ground to a halt.

President Trump said he will suspend foreclosures and evictions on homeowners at least til the end

Hud provides immediate relief for homeowners amid nationwide coronavirus response and suspends all foreclosures and evictions for the next 60 days.  As of March 18, 2020 the growing number of Americans face losing jobs and missing rent and mortgage payments.  These actions dictate homeowners with FHA-insured mortgages to meet the challenges of COVID-19 without fear of losing their homes, and help steady market concerns.

The president also said the Housing and Urban Development Department will suspend current and new foreclosures.
